Tips for success

A little effort up front gets you better offers and better outcomes. Here is what works, whether you are posting a request or pitching for the work.

Writing a request that gets great offers

The clearer your request, the better the offers you get back. Vague requests get vague quotes. Specific requests get people who know exactly how to help.

  1. Lead with the outcome. Say what you want done, not just the task. "Get my back deck safe and usable before summer" tells a Pro far more than "deck work".
  2. Add the details that change the price. Size, quantity, condition, materials, dates, access, whether it is online or on site. The stuff a Pro would otherwise have to ask.
  3. Set a realistic budget. A budget is not a ceiling, it is a signal. It helps the right people self-select and saves everyone time. You can mark it as firm or flexible.
  4. Say where and when. A suburb and a rough timeframe help local Pros know if they can take it on.
  5. Add a photo or two. For anything physical, a picture does the work of a paragraph. It gets you accurate quotes instead of guesses.
  6. Say what "done" looks like. If you have a standard in mind, name it. It sets expectations for everyone who offers.

You can post anonymously if you would rather not show your name while offers come in. Your request still gets seen by everyone who can help.

Choosing well

  • Do not just pick the cheapest. Read the message, check the rating, and look at what they attached. The best value is rarely the lowest number.
  • Use messages before you accept. Ask the one question that would change your mind. A good Pro will answer happily.
  • Check reviews and ratings. A solid track record tells you how they work, not just what they charge.
  • Agree payment before the work starts. Settle how and when you will pay, since payment happens directly between you for now.

Writing offers that win

Posters are choosing a person, not just a price. A thoughtful offer that answers their real question beats a cheap one-liner almost every time.

  1. Answer the actual request. Show you read it. Reference the detail that matters to them and tell them how you will handle it.
  2. Be specific about what you will deliver. What is included, what is not, and roughly how long it will take. Clarity builds trust.
  3. Price it straight. If a job needs a look before you can be exact, say so and give a range. Do not lowball to win and surprise them later.
  4. Show your work. Attach photos of similar jobs, examples, a licence or a certificate where it counts. Proof beats promises.
  5. Reply quickly and warmly. The first helpful, human reply often gets the job. Keep it friendly and plain-English.
  6. Keep your rating strong. Do what you said, communicate along the way, and finish clean. Your reviews are your best marketing.

Do

  • Read the whole request before you offer
  • Ask a smart question if something is unclear
  • Give a clear next step
  • Be upfront about timing and cost

Avoid

  • Copy-paste pitches that ignore the detail
  • Prices with no explanation
  • Overpromising on dates
  • Going quiet after you are accepted
